Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Gestures (artists book, 2007)

Marjolijn Dijkman

For the two exhibitions Adaptation and Neue Konzepte I developed together with Julie Peeters a pocket size publication that gives insight in the archival system and images of the ongoing research 'Theatrum orbis Terrarum'. There are 8 or 16 images per category that function like an index to the archive.

This part of my research is based on gestures. Examples of these gestures are found in the way that elements are adapted, concealed, demonstrated, mirrored, constructed, and so on. I systematically photographed how such modes of spatial organization could be investigated as gestures made to organize, maintain, or sometimes disrupt a certain order in our life world. The focus on gestures gave form to an archiving of autonomous places that would only in the greater collection of photos establish relations with other places and gestures.
